Dr C A Soper provides therapeutic counselling based on a compassionate understanding of the human mind as a product of evolution by natural selection.
As human beings, we think as we think, we feel as we feel, and we do what we do, not always because we want to or choose to, but usually for reasons that mattered for our survival in the prehistoric past, and which often still matter for our survival today. Emotional pain, sometimes intense and always distressing, is part of life as much for humans as it is for other animals. Pain usually exists for good reason, and understanding why we hurt can itself make pain easier to bear. Psychotherapy informed by evolutionary principles takes a realistic view of what can and cannot be consciously changed, and how that change may be brought about. With time and favourable conditions, the mind is programmed to right itself, and the most effective therapy works in co-operation with this innate capacity for self-healing.
Typically over 6 to 12 one-to-one weekly sessions, face-to-face or via Skype, Dr Soper can help English-speaking clients gain perspective of their emotional, cognitive and behavioural challenges, and identify practical steps towards making changes.
